Lodz University of Technology, in order to make the system of studies more transparent, fully implies the ECTS system. The system is used both for the transfer and accumulation of credits. The academic year consists typically of 60 ECTS points, each semester typically of 30 ECTS. Small differences are possible in certain study programs. Credits are given to all the students, both outgoing, incoming and not mobile, on the basis of the student's workload and are connected with the learning outcomes. The students’ workload is monitored on regular basis.
In order to facilitate the exchange of students, TUL uses the ECTS documents: Learning Agreement and Transcript of Records. The process of recognition is based on the Transcript of Records and the full recognition is stated in the document "Uznanie okresu studiów za granicą" (Recognition of the study period abroad) which is signed by the head of the basic organizational unit and by vice-rector for education. .
For incoming students the Transcript of Records including the number of ECTS points is issued.
TUL also recognizes the study periods abroad realized in the partner universities which do not use ECTS system. In such a case a head of the basic organizational unit analyzes the learning outcomes achieved by a student and awards a proper number of ECTS points.
Allocation procedure of ECTS points in study programmes realized at Lodz University of Technology
The allocation procedure of ECTS points to course units of study programmes is based on evaluation of common student workload required to achieve assumed learning outcomes.
The overall number of points attached to study programmes of first-cycle studies is 180/210 /240 points, second-cycle programs is respectively 90/120 points.
As far as first-cycle programs points are distributed through particular areas of education: general, basic, subject, specialist, complementary. As far as second-cycle studies are concerned, points are distributed through particular areas of education: basic, subject, specialist, complementary. The areas of education and credits allocated result from competences to be acquired which a graduate of particular area and level of study should possess. Subjects of study programmes are defined within areas of education mentioned above.
Learning outcomes such as skills and competences, content and forms of courses (lectures, courses, laboratories, projects and seminars) and estimated overall student workload (measured by ECTS points) are defined for each subject. The student overall workload consists of contact hours at university and estimated individual work hours. If it is needed, division of subject is implemented into two or more semesters (mathematics is an example). In those cases separate number of points is assigned to course units conducted in different semesters.
The division of subjects into particular semesters is implemented according to the following rules:
- Student workload on particular semesters should be balanced. A number of points of each semester should amount to quotient of overall number of points of particular study program and number of study semesters. The number of points amount to 30 credits for full-time studies and from 20 to30 credits for extramural studies.
- Rule of logical sequence of subjects in the following semesters has to be observed.
The procedure is performed by the Head of particular degree program or a proper commission of the degree programme and accepts a head of the basic organizational unit.
The study program is approved by Faculty Board and submitted to the Vice-Rector for Education after being approved by the Education Affairs Department. .
As the allocation of points is based on overall student workload, it is necessary to verify the estimated student workload by student survey. If the estimated student workload diverges from student grades, the reasons for differences have to be analyzed and as a result modification of study programmes should be suggested as well as subjects should be rearranged in particular semesters.
